The Necessidades Royal Estate, also known as the Tapada das Necessidades, corresponds to the old enclosure of the Necessidades Convent and resulted from a 17th century project by King D. João V. Over the course of almost 300 years, the space has been subject to several interventions by a series of monarchs, including D. Fernando, D. Pedro V (who ordered the construction of its domed greenhouse) and D. Carlos. It was during the latter’s reign that the Pavilion, known as Regalo House, was built to serve as Queen D. Amélia’s painting studio.
The gardens are romantic in style, with lakes, ponds and various statues, as well as stunning examples of various tree species, such as Mediterranean hackberry (Celtis australis) and umbus (Phytolacca dioica), a small forest of dragon trees (Dracaena draco) and perhaps one of Lisbon’s best collections of agaves, aloes, barbary figs and yuccas.
