Sensorial Maps of a Garden

The Gulbenkian Garden is a happy meeting between the mastery of its designers and the natural forms and colours of the plants that give it shape, framing its art- and poetry-filled buildings.

How do we get to know a space, with our eyes, ears, noses, hands, feet and mouths?

I imagine with my eyes and my ears / And with my hands and feet / And with my nose and mouth. / Imagining a flower, seeing it and smelling it / And to eat a fruit, is to know its meaning. / That is why on a hot day / I feel sad from enjoying it so much, / And I lie down flat in the grass / And I shut my warm eyes, / I feel my whole body laid out in reality, / I know the truth and I am happy. (Alberto Caeiro, “Sou um guardador de rebanhos”)

In this workshop, we will sharpen all of our senses to discover this Garden fully, like Alberto Caeiro, and build a sensory map of this place.

At the end of this activity, we will taste wild teas and patês prepared using some of the plants we identify.

A Garden for the Senses – Space, Beyond Matter

The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation gardens were designed by the landscape architects Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles and Manuel de Azevedo Coutinho during the 1950s and 1960s. In this stunning garden, as Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles put it, “we are in fact in the Mediterranean where the light is diffuse, so the leaves function as mirrors during one or two hours of the day and this is fundamental for life. And there is something else related to sound in this garden, which is the water, which flows here and there”

Any space is made up of much more than the eyes can see. In the Gulbenkian Garden, the light, the reflections, the different temperatures, and the sound of running water were all used as highly detailed tools with which to construct contrasting environments, which transport us to distant places in our memories.

On National Gardens Day, celebrated on the date that Gonçalo Ribeira Telles was born, landscape architect Aurora Carapinha will guide us through the Gulbenkian Garden revealing the subtle work of the senses in the construction of this garden.

Somatic Poetry Workshop

Tucked away in the heart of Lisbon, protected from the hustle and bustle of the city, we find the Lisbon Estufa Fria: three greenhouses that replicate specific biodiverse climates and act as a source of much inspiration.

How can poetry arise from a body wandering through a garden, as it touches a lichen on a tree trunk, watches stray cats and feels the humidity of fungi through its clothes? In a partnership between GERÚNDIO project and Jardins Abertos festival, Katarina Lanier (Bosnian-American ballerina, visual artist and independent researcher) proposes an experiment in somatic writing, where participants are invited to touch, feel, watch and poetically engage with the ecology around them, through the body and other materials.

Conducted by: Katerina Lanier
Location: Lisbon’s Estufa Fria

For ages 16 and above

Monsanto Perfumes

This informal walk through Monsanto Forest Park will create space for the germination of new conversations regarding what we can smell in our surroundings.

Join perfumer Miguel Matos and let your sense of smell and ideas about scents flow, as we answer some questions and ask many others: what is the art of fragrance? What is a perfumer and what does their work entail? How do we bottle natural elements to make perfumes? What can we smell in Monsanto and how can we take Monsanto home with us as a fragrant memory?

Drawing on the biodiversity present in the park, at the end of the walk a tincture will be made using plant species collected along the way.

This visit is led by Rui Costa, the landscape architect responsible for the Park, who will tell us about its various constitutive elements, the features that reveal the art of gardening from different eras, the Park’s owners and its current keepers.

Guided Visit to the Santos-o-Novo Convent Cloister

The word “jardim” (“garden” in Portuguese) has its roots in the German word meaning “enclosed”.

Santos-o-Novo Convent is located close to the river in the neighbourhood of Santa Apolónia. Construction began in 1609 during the reign of Filipe II of Portugal, under the direction of D. Cristóvão de Moura, the king’s viceroy and favourite. Sheltered unexpectedly within the building’s imposing rectilinear structure we find the church, richly decorated with gilded carvings and baroque azulejo tiles, and the cloister, the largest in terms of covered area in the Iberian Peninsular.

Discover and walk through the garden of this beautiful cloister, with its geometrically sculpted box hedges and fragrant roses.

In a “get your hands dirty” approach, visitors will work with the soil and select varieties to cultivate and harvest. Each participant will pick their own salad to take home with them, honouring the name of the original project: “From the Sky to the Table”.

It’s time to eradicate the concept of ‘weeds’ and recover the idea that many of these plants contribute significantly to our diet and health, as well as being vital for the ecosystem, as a shelter for animals, a source of food for pollinators and providing protection against soil erosion. At the end of this activity, we will taste wild teas and patês prepared using some of the plants we identify.
