The Urbem Forests Association is an NGO registered in Portugal, dedicated to cultivating native forests in urban settings and restoring ecosystems. Its mission is to reconnect people to nature, to community and to themselves, with the belief that it is vital to engage citizens if cities are to adapt to climate change. To this end, it promotes informal educational activities in our forests that aim to raise environmental awareness, working with schools, local communities and organisations. This urban forest is the result of a partnership between Lisbon City Council – within the scope of the international project Conexus (H2020) – Piloto 1 RENATURA. The project LIFE LUNGS, part of the EU LIFE programme, is another project that supports this pilot through Lisbon City Council. Urbem also receives further support from PLMJ.

The advantages of planting new forests (such as in the Belavista Park, or on the premises of the APA – Portuguese Environment Agency) are several: not only for the environment, but also for people, providing spaces where they can form friendship bonds and experience the physical and mental benefits of the natural world. In its own words, “Our vision is to make cities greener, where all living things, including humans, flora and fauna, can flourish”.
