Monteiro-Mor Botanical Park

This micro-architecture made from a wooden frame and walls of earth, straw and seeds forms the most basic of places for dwelling and introspection, building an antagonistic dialogue with the space that surrounds it. It alters and alerts us to the passing of time as a measure. It is geometrically and physically the opposite of the space that welcomes it in and invites it to stay, but also impels it to leave. An allegory to the contradictions of matter and of the earth as a vertical horizon, as an ephemeral affirmation of place. It is a garden and a square within a square.

A collective formed between Lisbon and São Paulo, Estúdio Jaca sees each project as a story – person, place, need. As creatives and creators, planners, intermediaries and implementers of ideas, they prioritise materials and the making process, which is usually artisanal and conducted as a co-creation. Their hands-on approach creates a space for dedicated, personalised projects that identify the best response to each challenge. From its grounding in architectural training, Estúdio Jaca takes on challenges from varying scales and disciplines: design and execution of furniture and products, art fabrication, ephemeral structures, scenography, commercial spaces, renovation and new builds.

Os Espacialistas bring nature out to play at Monteiro-Mor Botanical Park. By transforming a sculptural collection of 41 human-sized wooden canes into a game of Mikado, this performance will act as a conceptual echo of the bamboo plants and garden cane frames present in the park. As bearers of lines loaded with meanings, Os Espacialistas will walk from one side to the other in search of the best place in the park to install this set of fragments of amorous exchanges, as a sculptural performance/game full of countless varieties of fictional beginnings and possible artistic dialogues with Nature. Only by increasing and decreasing in scale does man inhabit, imagine the memory of a garden.

“Escondido em plena vista” (Hidden in plain sight) challenges the degenerative role of clothing today, proposing a return to regenerative clothes that respect planet Earth through natural dyeing processes. Through the medium of a range of wearable capes, the public is encouraged to think of clothes as a source of power, meaning and knowledge. Each of these capes (which visitors are allowed to wear) will be dyed and stamped with the plants that grow in Monteiro-Mor Botanical Park, each of them revealing their unique story and qualities. Wearable art that relates the wearer to their nature and creates respect for our planet.
