Lisbon’s Estufa Fria

Avenue, intersection, road, block. Urban vocabularies are woven into the fabric of the Estufa in an unsettling contrast between its status as a work of “constructed nature” and the innate nature of its constituent parts. “Natural Construído” is an exercise in exploring the dichotomy latent in the space. Implanted in an old quarry, Lisbon’s Estufa Fria now fills with roots and living organisms the gaps in the earth that had been blown apart by mineral extraction. Today, the equilibrium between the total mass of material produced by humanity and the total mass of living matter on the planet has become irrevocably unbalanced.

Colectivo Warehouse works in the areas of architecture, urbanism and design linked to social and cultural projects, with a particular focus on public space and places of collective use. It believes in co-creation as a means of building more resilient communities and in self-led construction as a dynamic of appropriating space and empowering the people involved, both technically and socially. It also promotes the importance of process, horizontality, the sharing of experience and resources, and informal and non-hierarchical forms of learning.

“Gasoduto” (Pipeline) is an audiovisual installation addressing the environmental and social impact of the pipelines that traverse continents to transport some of the most valuable materials in the world.

Arum, Biarum, Stomata. By naming elements of the world we bestow on them relevance and existence, an act of saving them from being forgotten and a conscious gaze on our surroundings. What names are given to the plants around us? What beings are these whose survival finds itself suspended between climate change and direct Human intervention in their habitats?

“Litania” is a sonic exercise, an invocation composed of landscapes of voices and natural whispers, a call to attention in the form of a statement of trees and names.
