Passing through the Museum of Lisbon building, which forms part of an old palace and recreational grounds dating from the 18th century, you will find the garden of the Palácio Pimenta.

It is divided into three large areas: to the right of a pathway flanked by linden trees, is the great lawn, where male peacocks strut and show off; to the left, a thicket of cypress, cork oak and grevillea. Follow the pathway, passing a pond with classical statues, and you will arrive at the Bordallo Pinheiro garden. Here you will be surprised by giant ceramic animals hiding between the box hedges, fruit of the artist’s bold imagination.

In the middle of the hedges you will also encounter the characteristic silhouette of the Japanese acacia (Sophora japonica var pendula), its branches cascading towards the ground.

Here there are Worms

In the gardens of the Museum of Lisbon – Pimenta Palace there are countless plants and animals, each of them with their own role in its ecosystem. Far from view, hidden in the soil underneath layers of plant detritus, there are worms turning vegetable waste into the compost fundamental to the plant community and other organisms in the garden. In this workshop you will roll your sleeves up to discover the process of composting, the creatures involved, and their role in the life cycle of the gardens. Join us at the composting station at Pimenta Palace.

Biodiversity at the Museum

The gardens of the Museum of Lisbon – Pimenta Palace are leisure gardens designed over the past three centuries to complement the 18th century palace that houses the museum. They are divided into three distinct areas: a formal walled garden, a thicket and two old agricultural areas that have since been converted. On this visit guided by Ana Margarida Campos you will discover trees, bushes, flowers, herbs, insects and birds big and small, all in the gardens of Pimenta Palace.
