Praça do Império

This accomplished project by architect Francisco Caldeira Cabral is summed up in this reflection of S. Bernardo: “One learns far more from forests than from books; trees and rocks will teach you what you will never learn from your masters.”

Upholding the tradition of beautiful gardens next to the Tejo river, to the west of the centre of Lisbon we find the gardens of the Centro Cultural de Belém. There are 7 gardens to be visited, each conceived with a distinctive function and in dialogue with the building, as well as keeping in context with other nearby gardens.

From the small patios and famous Olive Garden facing the river, to the Water Garden facing north, or the more recent Vertical Gardens of the CCB square, you will discover the many facets of this iconic space.

CCB Gardens — Vertical Garden

This new vertical garden at CCB integrates Lisbon European Green Capital 2020 and uplifts the ‘Caminho José Saramago’ pedestrian path. This garden was inspired in a forest and contemplates contemporary themes such as sustainability, ecology and urban density. Despite being recent, the structure is already home to several species of insects and birds.

CCB Gardens — Water Garden

The Water Garden located in the area to the north of the building, and leading directly to Rua Bartolomeu Dias, is one of the entrances to the Berardo Collection Museum. Situated at a much higher level than the street, this garden contains a long lake overlooking the city, establishing a close relationship between this building of the CCB and the city itself.

CCB Gardens — Olive Tree Garden

The Olive Tree Garden, overlooking the River Tagus, enjoys a privileged location in this architectural whole. The lawn that stretches along the building’s southern façade runs alongside the Restaurante Este/Oeste, Fábrica das Artes/the CCB Educational Service and also the newly created space of the Garagem Sul/Architecture Exhibitions. This makes it a privileged space to be enjoyed by all: families that come here to picnic, young people relaxing under the olive trees, or even children playing in the lakes on either side of the garden.

CCB Gardens — River Garden

This garden is a terrace that extends the adjoining room. It is protected from the exterior by a large seedbed. The large paved area allows it to be used for events, which strengthens the symbiosis with the room. The shine of the Portuguese sidewalk resembles the light shining back from the river waters and the reflecting pool connects it to the south gardens.

CCB Gardens — Small Auditorium Garden

This secret garden can be discovered from the Small Auditorium. It has a square shape which reminds us of the Arabic influence in the south of Portugal. The terracotta terrace is surrounded by three beds of dense vegetation. The long reflecting pool establishes a mediation with the River Tagus and makes a whole with the Olive Tree Garden and the River Garden.

CCB Gardens — Tropical Garden

This garden is in the northern limit of the CCB square and is almost unnoticed. Its lower height allows special light and temperature conditions. This configuration has potentiated the growth of multiple species from all over the world. Nowadays, the delicate vegetation provides a natural background for some of the rooms in the exhibition centre.
