“From the sky to the table” is a community project developed as part of the programme BIP/ZIP – Priority Neighbourhoods and Areas of Intervention, by Lisbon City Council. This aims to promote food self-subsistence through the use of vertical gardening in local communities, with a focus on the neighbourhoods of Murtas and São João de Brito/Pote D’Água, in Alvalade, as well as fomenting social relationships and revitalising the concept of neighbourliness.

The Aquilino Ribeiro Machado Horticultural Park, located between these neighbourhoods, has become a meeting place for the local population by encouraging a practical, conscious and reflexive form of co-living, supported by active participation in the construction of a shared space in the city.

The project seeks to make the most of the pedagogic potential of this model, bringing the production process and consumer closer together to stimulate involvement in agricultural practices – from the choice of seeds to the selection of wardens – and in pressing questions of food sovereignty, thus leading to community self-organising and environmental and socioeconomic sustainability.

At this vertical garden you can find romaine and purple oak leaf lettuce varieties, chard, rocket, basil, coriander and mizuna, an Asian variety of leaf vegetable, among others.

From the Sky to the Table

The project “From the Sky to the Table”, a community project promoting food self-sustainability through vertical farming, has been developed in the Aquilino Ribeiro Machado Horticultural Park, between the neighbourhoods of Murtas and São João de Brito e Pote D’Água, in Alvalade.

This workshop explores vertical urban agricultural systems where participants can learn about the benefits and challenges of vertical farming, different models for management and production, its importance in an urban context, and how these systems might contribute to a more sustainable future.

In a “get your hands dirty” approach, visitors will work with the soil and select varieties to cultivate and harvest. Each participant will pick their own salad to take home with them, honouring the name of the original project: “From the Sky to the Table”.
